2010 Rankings Notes

Valerie Meyer

February 17, 2010: Every year, some patch winners return their patches or contact us and ask us not to send them, so this year we provided an eco-friendly "virtual" patch option (an email with a copy of the letter and a virtual patch). Requests for virtual patches were collected through February 5, 2010. Thanks to the 20% of you who requested this option! The virtual rankings patches were emailed out to the 64 recipients yesterday. Here is a sample of what they received. Reception has been positive.

For those of you waiting for your patch to come through the mail, then the wait will be a little longer. We're blaming it on the snow.

January 29, 2010: The December 31, 2009 Brown course rankings were corrected in order to scale the rankings to an average of 100 for the top three USOF members who received an official ranking. Original rankings included a non-USOF member in the average of the top 3.

The December 31, 2009 White and Orange course rankings were also corrected in order to scale rankings to an average of 100 for the top three USOF members who received an official ranking (including those who received an official ranking after being awarded a credit day).

Rankings for January 20, 2010 have been posted.

About 20% of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze patch winners have opted for the "virtual" patch. It is not too late to choose this option in lieu of a mailed patch. See details below.

December 31, 2009: Updated rankings have been posted after adding the last two events of 2009 - LAOC's Vasquez Variety Pack A-meet in December. Please review the posted rankings, and let me know if you find any errors. These are the preliminary end-of-year rankings for 2009. Commencing today, December 31, is a 21 day review period ending January 21, 2010. During this period, you may report data errors, and if necessary, corrected rankings will be calculated and posted.

Credit days for the US Relay Championships, and for duties at an A-meet which prevented an individual from participating in an event, have been applied. Individuals with an official ranking, but showing only three ranking days had a credit day applied. Please note, that a credit day for A-meet duties must be requested by the meet director, or initiated by the affected individual, and is not automatically applied. If you feel that you did not get credit, and you are short an event for an official ranking, please contact me.

A reminder that you must have been a USOF member sometime between January 1-November 15, 2009 to receive an official USOF rankings, and to be eligible for rankings patches. Rankings patches are awarded in the following manner to those qualifying for an official end-of-year ranking on all competitive courses (open courses do not earn patches):

The top three earn a gold patch.

Then the scores of the top three are averaged and multiplied by 80% and 70% and used to determine who earns a silver or bronze patch.

Example: for F-21+, the top three scores are 94.87, 86.65 and 83.81, and average to 88.44.

88.44 x 80% = 70.75. Besides the top three, all eligible F-21+ with scores of 70.75 or higher earn a silver patch.

88.44 x 70% = 61.91. All eligible F-21+ with scores of 61.91 to 70.74 earn a bronze patch.

2010 JWOC Team Selection

The US Team for the 2010 Junior World Orienteering Championship will be chosen by the selection committee of Jeff Saeger, Scott Drumm and Janet Porter. The selection will be based on the official US Rolling Rankings including events from April 18, 2009 through April 11, 2010. The F-20 rankings for females and the M-20 rankings for males will be used. To be eligible for JWOC selection, competitors must have a minimum of 4 ranked events and a minimum ranking score of 75. A maximum of 6 males and 6 females will be selected. Any competitors who would like an exception may petition the Selection Committee before April 11, 2010.

The Flying Pig XIV event is April 9-11, 2010; this event is also the US Interscholastic Championships. Competitors who run in the Female Varsity or the Male Varsity categories will have their runs count as F-20 and M-20 scores unless they specifically ask the Rankings Committee not to do so. Competitors in the F-20 and M-20 categories will be scored as usual.

Questions on the JWOC Team selection process should be directed to the JWOC team Selection Committee, not to the Rankings Committee.

2010 Canadian Ranked Events:

As Chair of the US Rankings Committee, and in consultation with Valerie Meyer, I've decided that the three events that are part of the North American Orienteering Championships will count for the 2010 US Rankings. Although we hope and expect many US competitors will participate in the other 2010 Canadian events, no other events will count towards US Rankings.
For the 2010 NAOC events, only competitors in A or E categories will be ranked.

Because of the differences in age group categories in the US and Canada, several Canadian age groups span different courses in the US ranking structure.
These are M20A, M45A and W20A. Competitors in these age groups will be ranked in the class corresponding to their (orienteering) age unless they notify the rankings committee before the event that they want to be ranked in the other class.

So, for example, an 18 year old female running F20A would be ranked on F-18 (Brown) unless she notifies us that she wants to be ranked on F-20 (Green) and a 50 year old male running M45A will be ranked in M50+ (Green) unless he notifies us that he wants to be ranked in M45+ (Red).
